Hevel Lays on the Bed of Nails9
I
On the fifth day of Lano in the year 137510, the Lord Meklah spoke to Hevel and said:
“Listen closely, for I am the Lord, Meklah,
Who has brought you from death to shadows.
You will go to the Shadowed Temple11 and prophecy.
If you deny me, you will surely die.
For I am your Lord, Meklah,
And you are my servant, Hevel.”
Hevel dropped to his knees and trembled. He swore in silence that he would deliver whatever message Meklah desired. The Lord Meklah spoke to Hevel and said:
“Listen closely, for I am the Lord, Meklah
And the message is already upon you.
Begone and make haste. You are my servant.”
And so on the tenth day of Lano in the year 1375, Hevel arrived at the Shadowed Temple. He arrived when the Hierarchs and the Immaculate had gone to sleep. Hevel entered the main chamber and spread out nails along the ground in a shape about seven feet long and half as wide. Hevel then did as the Lord Meklah instructed and lay upon the bed of nails.
When the Immaculate and the Hierarchs walked in after they awoke, they cried out, “Hevel! Why do you do this thing? It brings dishonor to our hall!”
II
At this, Hevel responded:
“The Lord Meklah has seen your secret thoughts.
It is you that has defiled this place! The Lord Meklah
Has proclaimed the destruction of this place,
Unless you turn and repent for your sins.”
At this, the Immaculate stepped forward and said, “You assume too much, High Priest! No prophet may disclose a secret! It is you who have brought disgrace.”
At this Hevel responded:
“Before you were a babe,
Did your mother know how to knit the flesh?
Could she string you together, a third amongst fourths,
Like so many clothes on a line?
The shadows knitted you, and taught her to knit,
And her body came together to make yours,
As the secret became known, and this is surely no blasphemy
Unless you call our Lord the Blasphemer.”
The Immaculate was offended by this remark, but there was division among the Hierarchs. Some grew angry, and one stepped forward to say, “High Priest, if the things you say are true, then you will be able to provide proof that Meklah is with you and not us.”
III
At this Hevel responded:
“You dare to question the shadows,
When you have taken them as your cloak?
Your fate shall be dry as bones left in the desert
Never to touch life-giving waters again.
For if Meklah is with me, at this moment,
A baby girl shall be born in Bladefall.
Her name shall be Aur`Ienu12,
For you walk unknowing of your sin.”
The Hierarchs were taken aback by this statement. They swiftly called a group of neonates together and sent them to scour Bladefall. Evening had set upon the city when the neonates returned, carrying news of the birth on their tongue.
At this Hevel said:
“You shall be dealt a great blow if you do not repent,
For our Lord will bring us to ruin, one and all.
He shall repeal the blessings he gives us,
And He will make sure all our ways are cursed.
Thus says Meklah, your Lord:
‘I will bathe the thief in light,
And the farmer’s crop in darkness,
And you will fear your Lord again.’”
The third section and the beginning of the central prophetic narrative of the work. After introducing the setting and providing important background for the prophet’s understanding of Meklah, now the reader can follow Hevel on his journey and understand his motives and message. ↩
An unverifiable date, given the contents of the work itself. It seems likely that if the events did take place, they took place in either 1375 or 1376.↩
The High Temple of Meklah. It exists in multiple locations at once, and is only accessible to those who have been shown the rites of entrance. ↩
An Asyndi word that roughly translates to “unbeknownst”. ↩
